Background of the Study
Rural-urban migration is reshaping social structures in Yenagoa, where traditional family systems have long been characterized by close-knit, extended relationships and communal support. Historically, extended families in rural areas provided comprehensive care, social security, and cultural continuity. However, economic pressures and educational opportunities drive many young people to urban centers, resulting in fragmented family units and a decline in intergenerational support. This demographic shift poses challenges for maintaining traditional values and practices that depend on close familial bonds. Recent studies have shown that while migration can offer economic benefits, it simultaneously weakens the social fabric that underpins community resilience (Ibrahim, 2023; Musa, 2024). This study investigates the consequences of migration on family structures, aiming to balance modern economic realities with cultural preservation (Adeola, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
The migration of family members from rural to urban areas in Yenagoa has disrupted traditional family structures, leading to diminished communal support and eroding cultural values. The fragmentation of extended families undermines the established roles that sustain intergenerational bonding and collective responsibility. Despite the economic benefits of urban migration, the weakening of traditional family ties poses social challenges that have not been fully addressed. This study examines how rural-urban migration affects traditional family structures and seeks to identify potential measures to mitigate its adverse impacts.
